When one or more teeth in a row go missing, the resulting gap in your grin impacts your health as much as your appearance. Overly wide spaces in your mouth make it much harder to thoroughly chew food, clearly enunciate words, or laugh without feeling self-conscious about the way you look.

Fortunately, your dentist can restore your smile’s functionality and appearance with artificial teeth, like partial dentures or dental bridges. If you’re not sure which solution is best for you, continue reading to learn more about each so you can make an informed decision!

What are Partial Dentures?

Dentures are the tried-and-true way to rebuild grins because they’re a versatile solution that can be customized to meet your unique needs. Although a full set can replenish an entire arch all at once, partial sets contain the correct number of porcelain pontics (artificial teeth) to replace your pearly whites that went missing. They usually contain metal clips that clasp to healthy teeth in your mouth to remain in place and are removable, so they’re not considered a permanent fixture.

When are Partial Dentures Best?

Whether you’ve lost several consecutively or have gaps sprinkled throughout your smile, this prosthetic can fill them in so you look and feel more like yourself. They’re easy to take out of your mouth to brush them (and your remaining natural teeth) twice daily to prevent oral issues like tooth decay and gum disease.

Because the base is made of affordable acrylic, this option may cost less upfront than a dental bridge but might not last as long.

What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a single oral appliance with the necessary number of pontics sandwiched between a dental crown at each end. These anchor over healthy abutment teeth or surgically placed dental implants on either side of the gap in your grin to fill it in. Typically made of durable ceramic, these can be customized to match the size, shade, and shape of your natural ones for seamless results.

When is a Dental Bridge Best?

This method is ideal for one to three consecutively missing teeth because it provides more stability over wider spaces than a dental bridge. It’s cemented into place and is considered a ‘permanent’ fixture in your mouth because it can only be removed with your provider’s help. To keep it in good shape, all that’s required is maintaining your twice-daily dental hygiene routine of brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

If you’re still unsure which restoration is right for you, the best way to find out is to schedule a consultation with your dentist!
