Now that the kids are settled into the new school year, it’s time to look forward to spooky season! Many people embrace this time of year and set up tricks to haunt their friends, neighbors, and family. Remember, though, fear is just a concept! We can work ourselves up into a good scare over almost anything from monsters under the bed to dental appointments.
If you’re like many others, you might even have allowed anxiety over the dentist to keep you from visiting for quite a while. This can be harmful to your health, especially if you (or your children) plan to enjoy the many sweet treats available this time of year! Continue reading for 3 good reasons why you shouldn’t be too afraid to see the dentist.
Reason #1: They’re Not Judging You
It could be that you’ve skipped your checkups because you’re worried you’ll be judged for the state of your smile. It’s normal to feel self-conscious about flaws in our teeth, especially if it was our own making. Keep in mind, though, that the dentist is there to help you. They’re more concerned with getting your teeth and gums healthy than berating you for the state they’re in. Besides, there are a lot of things that can lead to imperfect teeth besides poor dental hygiene habits including genetics, certain medications, or an accident. Your dentist is aware of all of this and wants you to feel relaxed and comfortable during your visit.
Reason #2: Appointments Don’t Take Long
Even if your head knows the dentist isn’t there to judge, it can be hard to convince yourself that’s true. You might still feel uneasy regardless. The good news is that most dental checkups and cleanings don’t last long! Even for those who have lengthier procedures on the horizon, you still know that at some point the work will be done. You’ll only be spending a measurable, finite amount of time in the dentist’s chair. You can keep it together long enough to make it through!
Reason #3: It Doesn’t Have to Hurt
We often think of dentists as torturers of teeth, or like a necessary evil to contend with that will inevitably end in tenderness or pain. That’s just not the case! Your dentist knows that many people have anxiety and will do what they can to help put you at ease. In many cases, they may even provide sedation options. This can be administered orally in pill form that you take just before you arrive so that by the time you walk into the office, you start to feel the effects. Alternatively, your dentist might offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) that’s administered through a mask placed over your nose while they work. Either way, you’re sure to feel calm and tranquil for the duration.
Being frightened by the dentist could spell an unhappy ending this Halloween! Vulnerabilities in your teeth can be triggered by copious amounts of cookies, candies, and other sweets. Overcome your fear and make an appointment today! Then you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your pearly whites are strong and healthy this year.
